A 192 mile cycle over 24 hours - ARE YOU CRAZY? - Blog by Oli Cock

I have been asked this a few times over recent years. I may be a little crazy but here is why I do it….

4 years ago I was introduced to a charity called Duchenne UK, by a colleague of mine. He knew that I had done a number of cycling events to raise money for a charity that was very close to my heart – a hospice that was providing respite care for my nephew. He suggested I look at doing the Duchenne Dash – a 24 hour cycle from London to Paris (192 miles) for Duchenne UK.

My initial reaction was that whilst the event sounded like a great challenge, I had no connection to the Charity, so I didn’t think I could help.

He just said – “go take a look”, so I did………

What I discovered, and I choose my words carefully, was life changing.

DMD is a devastating muscle wasting disease and is the most common genetic killer of children worldwide. There is currently no treatment or cure. The two founders of Duchenne UK were mothers whose sons were diagnosed with DMD, who refused to accept that there was no cure, that there was virtually no research being undertaken, and vowed to fight to change that. They initially formed individual charities that came together to form Duchenne UK in 2016. I saw a video and read messages from these two amazing women and I committed to ride the Dash in 2016.

The 2016 Duchenne Dash was one of the most humbling and life affirming experiences of my life.

It was brilliantly organised, which was great, and it was physically demanding, as you would expect. But that wasn’t what made it so memorable. It was the sense of achievement in contributing to a breakthrough that would help so many people, many of whom were parents I had ridden with or who were part of the support crew. It was their dedication and absolute focus to save their boys that was awe inspiring.

I committed to bring a team back the following year and with my last business we adopted Duchenne UK as our charity partner – a first for Duchenne UK.  I have brought a team every year since and I had, prior to joining Communisis, already committed to be there on the start line with my team of 10, in June 2020 for my 5th Dash.

Which is where my new team came in. I reached out to the Brand Deployment Division to find all the Crazy Cyclists and within no time at all I had a team of 10 plus myself.

For every rider we commit, we need to raise £4,000 so we have a target of £44,000 but as we like a round number we are going to call it £50,000!!

Over the next few months, we will be holding various fundraising events so please keep on the look out for ways to support us and this fantastic cause!! We will also be sharing frequent updates on our riders, team training and our fundraising efforts. Follow us here

If you want to know more about the event or are interested in taking part in the dash, the website link is there https://dash.duchenneuk.org

And a shameless plea for support, if you would like to sponsor the team and support Duchenne UK, you can find our fundraising page here. https://www.justgiving.com/tea...

Finally, If you are in any doubt as to why this has had such a lasting impact on me and why I’m committed to supporting Duchenne UK until we find a cure then take a look at the following video

It might not change your life, but you could help change thousands of others.
